My Sugar Detox Story

I would like to give a little background on my experience with the Paleolithic diet, why I started the Healthy Hub, and why I have chosen to host a free community sugar detox.

A couple years ago I decided to see a naturopath about my chronic back pain. I have been suffering with this pain for 7 years, and prior to this visit I thought it was something I’d have to live with for the rest of my life. A friend convinced me to give Dr. Weeks a chance.  I thought, why not, what do I have to lose?

When I met Dr. Weeks, he surprised me with a strict 2 week sugar-free paleo diet  (aka Sugar Detox). At that time, I considered my diet really healthy; however, I was curious to see what results this sugar detox would have on my back pain. I didn’t know or understand the correlation at that time.

On my way home from Dr. Weeks’ office, I swung by the grocery store and loaded up on fresh produce. My journey had begun. I already felt good taking the initiative and trying something new for my health.

Surprising Results

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when it happened. I was washing dishes, and it was day 3 of the detox. All of a sudden, everything felt clear to me and I had an amazing ability to focus. I have always struggled with ADD, and although I did not schedule my visit with Weeks about this issue, this new diet seemed to alleviate my symptoms.  When I was a freshman in high school, a medical board of professionals diagnosed me with ADD, but I never believed that I had it. I thought my ADD and exuberant energy were just part of who I am. On day 3 of this new detox, I FELT the difference. It wasn’t the back pain I had initially visited Dr. Weeks for, but I could feel a difference with my focus and attention. I knew then, I was hooked.

My back pain did subside over time.  That initial visit to Dr. Weeks started me on the right track, and after the sudden difference in my attention span and two months on a restricted diet, my back pain was finally alleviated.  Everything in my life seemed to keep getting better. My skin was glowing, I slept better, I had more energy, I even felt happier.  Best of all, I had the ability to focus. With this newfound focus, I believed I could grow into the person I was meant to be.

Taking the Next Steps

I became passionate about nutrition, and also wanted to learn as much as I could about how food affects the body. The more I learned, the more amazed I was, and I wanted to share this new information.

I invited Dr. Weeks to come and present “Diet for Disease Prevention” in my small town of Seaside, Oregon. I was amazed by the turnout of over 100 people at the presentation. I realized that there is a need for this type of information in my community, and that was when I decided to create the Healthy Hub.

My vision for the Healthy Hub is to be a central location where people in the community can learn how to nurture themselves in their health and wellness. The Healthy Hub is also committed to enriching the community through both classes and programs on health and wellness.

I believe the sugar detox is one of the best ways for people to discover and reconnect to their relationship with food. In my experience with the sugar detox, everyone that participates takes away something beneficial. Isn’t it worth giving up sugar for 10 days to discover how great you can feel?
