Dining Out?

Don’t worry! Just because you’ve adopted a Whole Foods lifestyle doesn’t mean you’re stuck eating at home! Follow my guide to get the most out of your meals on-the-go!

  1. Look online and search out your options before you go. Having an idea before you’re in the restaurant booth can save you tons of time and frustration! No website or clue where you’re going? No problem…skip to steps 2 and 3!

  1. Don’t be shy to ask to have your meal modified. I do this all the time and I’ve never ran across anyone who was mean or annoyed at me. They really want to serve you something you want to eat! If you feel self-conscious or high-maintenance, then just leave a little extra love in your gratuity.

  1. Avoid anything fried and be very wary of anything with sauce. Most sauces contain sugar, gluten and corn syrup. Ask before you order! To spice up your meal, opt for these sugar-free, whole condiments: mustards, hot sauces, vinegar and olive oil.

Menu Ideas

Breakfast:

Breakfast is one of the easiest meals to transform. When eating out, I order an omelet with no cheese and swap the potatoes and toast for a side salad and fruit.

American Food:

Bun-less burger on lettuce, tomato and pickles. Enjoy with hot sauce and mustard.

Broiled chicken with steamed veggies

Mexican Food:

Always ask about the sauces! Most salsas are made fresh with real, whole ingredients.

Tacos are great as a salad! Top with fresh guacamole and salsa.

One of my favorite meals from a local Mexican restaurant is a veggie burrito with no tortilla or cheese. I add extra guacamole and chicken.

Italian Food:

Meats and veggies that are baked, grilled or roasted. Be wary of anything sauced.

Chinese Food:

I avoid Chinese food as many of the dishes are heavily sauced and contain sugar and MSG. It’s hard to find anything healthy is most Chinese Restaurants.

Going to a Friend’s:

Coordinate with the host! See what they are planning and what you can bring to add to it. I usually bring a hearty salad or even another main course. If I’m in a challenge and/or detox, I let them know about the guidelines I’m sticking to. If the host is making something like home-baked mac and cheese, I’ll say something like, “Oh wow, that sounds so amazing but dairy and gluten don’t agree with me, I’m sorry to seem picky….” I have never had anyone feel uncomfortable or upset. If all else fails, you can always say that your doctor’s having you avoid X certain food…

Being honest and open can create a wonderful spirit of collaboration and usually people are really interested in what you are doing and why. The more you share your why, the more your confidence builds.

Most Importantly….

Relax and have fun! Try to plan ahead but remember that food is not central to your enjoyment. Focus on the friends, family, and loved ones you’re with, and you’ll have a worry-free time.
