How I Prepare for the Sugar Detox

Are you unsure how to prepare for the sugar detox? Follow this handy guide that makes it a cinch to get yourself and your family on board.

How I Prepare for the Sugar Detox

Involve Your Family

I like to get everyone in my household as involved as possible! Even the littlest members can help with cleaning out the pantry, organizing the kitchen, or bagging up food to donate. What’s great about this detox is with its 3 levels, the whole house can be involved!

Remove Excess Sugar Before the Detox Begins

I also start by cutting out as much sugar as possible before the detox begins.  This will make for an easier transition once it’s go time. While I’m cutting out sugar, I increase my intake of healthy fats and protein to keep my blood sugar stable and the sugar cravings at bay. If I start feeling an intense sugar craving, I eat a big spoonful of almond butter or a small teaspoon of coconut oil. Then I distract myself with a walk, task or a phone call and the craving disappears!

Worried that fat will make you fat? Don’t. Healthy fats do not make you fat; sugar does. We actually need fat to loose the fat. Our brain, hormones and nervous system need fat to function. Once your body feels safe that it is getting the required fat to function, it sheds the unwanted “protective” layer.

How to Prepare the Week-of

Grocery Shop on Sunday Morning

Sundays are my shopping and prep days. Prepare a list beforehand, so you don’t forget an important ingredient. Shop the outer perimiter of the store instead of buying the processed goods in the center aisles.

Prepare Your Veggies and Dips

Stock up on veggies that are easy to grab for snacks or chop for stir-fries or curries. I buy and chop broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and celery. I will also buy cucumber, rainbow chard, zucchini and fresh herbs. (Do not chop these, as they are most flavorful if prepared right before use.) I also keep some salad greens on hand. Roast butternut squash to have a healthy carb at the ready.

Make a paleo mayo and a zucchini hummus to have a couple of dips on hand for snacking. I love the paleo mayo because you can adjust it to any flavor you want to add to your dishes. For example, I add an mssugar-freegar free, high quality adobo seasoning for a creamy style ranch.

Meal Prep Like a Pro

Snacks

The first few days, you’ll be much hugrier than usual! Keep at least a few healthy snacks nearby. Eventually, as your blood sugar balances and your nutrient density increases you will notice that you might not need to snack. This is the magic of blood sugar regulation: food freedom. Your mind doesn’t always need to be occupied with where your next meal is coming from. Some ideas:

  • Pre-cut veggie sticks
  • Olives
  • Avocados (sprinkled with sea salt and a couple of dashes of hot sauce)
  • Nuts
  • Artichoke hearts
  • Small piece of fruit with nut butter

Breakfast

On Sunday I will make a big frittata. This helps to have a breakfast on hand and is also great for snacks. I also like to hard boil some eggs for either breakfast or snack options. I also  make a paleo sugar free, grain free granola.

Lunch

I will make a broccoli salad, tuna salad or chicken salad and add to romaine leaves for a “wrap” or add to some loose leave greens. I also make extra dinner, as leftovers make for a great lunch.

Dinner

On Sunday, I make double batch of slow cooker chili. I know that may seem excessive, but I throw one batch in the freezer to use around day 8. The chili is awesome to pack for lunches as well. For the rest of the 10 days I stick to what I know. I make stir-fries (with my pre chopped veg), curries and meat with a double serving of vegetables.

The trick is not to make it too complicated. Have a goal to try 3-4 new recipes during this detox then build from what you know. For example, have a burger but without the bun on top of lettuce, tomato, and pickles. Use mustard, hot sauce and paleo mayo for your sauce.

There you have it. It’s not so scary right? Remember, it just meat and veggies. You’ve got this!
